The Netherlands’ Gambling Authority Imposes Weekly Penalty on Illegal Operator
The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Netherlands’ Gambling Authority, has once again taken action against an operator for violating the country’s gaming regulations. This time, the KSA has issued a financial penalty to an operator accused of conducting illegal operations in the Dutch market.
Illegal Online Gaming Operations
The KSA found that Starscream Limited was offering online gaming services to Dutch players without the required license. Despite not having the necessary authorization, Starscream’s online gaming brands, including rantcasino, sugarcasino, and allstarzcasino, were still accepting players from the Netherlands.
Upon investigation, the KSA discovered that players in the Netherlands could easily register accounts, deposit money, and participate in games on the three websites. The authority also noted the absence of any measures to prevent these sites from taking money from Dutch players.
Strict Regulations on Gambling
The Netherlands has strict laws in place to regulate gambling activities and disallows offshore operators from targeting the local market. Violators are subject to warnings and penalties, as seen in the case of Starscream. The KSA has ordered the operator to cease operations in the Dutch market or face a weekly fine of up to EUR 280,000.
Continued Vigilance Against Unlicensed Operators
The KSA remains vigilant in identifying and penalizing unlicensed operators. Recent actions taken by the authority include issuing a financial penalty to Gamusoft for offering gaming services to Dutch players without a license. Additionally, a warning was issued to 711, a licensed gaming company, for advertising violations targeting minors.
While 711 took steps to address the violation, it failed to report the incident to the KSA. Nevertheless, the authority recognized the company’s efforts and decided not to levy a fine.
Decrease in Risky Gambling Behavior
In a recent report, the KSA highlighted the positive impact of safer gambling initiatives in the Netherlands. The report revealed a significant decline in risky spending following the implementation of new measures. Before the changes, 4% of accounts were losing over EUR 1,000 per month. After the safer gaming regulations took effect, this number dropped to 1.2%.
