AUSTRAC Calls for Inactive Digital Currency Exchange Firms to Take Action
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has recently made a bold move by urging inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms to either utilize their registrations or face the risk of having them revoked. This initiative, known as the “Use it or Lose it” campaign, will also extend to crypto ATM providers, as announced by AUSTRAC.

Currently, all DCEs are required to be registered with AUSTRAC to operate legally and offer exchange services. By canceling the registrations of inactive firms, AUSTRAC aims to mitigate these risks and make it more challenging for criminals to misuse currency exchange services for illicit purposes.
Furthermore, the campaign is expected to enhance the accuracy and integrity of AUSTRAC’s register, ensuring that only active and compliant DCE firms are listed.
Establishing a Publicly Searchable DCE Register
In addition to addressing inactive DCE services, AUSTRAC intends to establish a publicly searchable DCE register to enable citizens to verify the legitimacy of service providers. This move aims to empower the public to identify registered and regulated cryptocurrency providers, thereby driving out criminal elements from the industry.
